“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10, KJV
What I really love about this verse is how the very same words can bring peace to one heart and stir something uncomfortable in another. Sometimes, they do both within us.
For someone who is exhausted, frightened, or barely holding things together, “Be still” can feel like finally being able to exhale. You can bring your worries before the Lord. You can admit that you are tired. There is no shame in needing help, and you do not have to have every answer before coming into His presence.
But when we are determined to have our own way, those same words can be unsettling.
We want God to handle what frightens us, but are we willing to surrender what we insist on controlling? We ask Him to direct our steps, but will we follow when He leads us somewhere we hadn’t planned to go?
That part reaches into my own heart, too.
It is comforting to know that God is in control. It can be humbling to accept what that means for our own plans.
Psalm 46 places these words in the middle of a world in upheaval: the earth giving way, mountains falling, waters roaring, and nations raging. Yet God remains His people’s refuge. The One who brings wars to an end declares His authority over all the earth. His call to be still carries both reassurance and power.
There is comfort here for the hurting, and a sobering call for those resisting Him. Our strength has limits. Our plans do not have the final word. No amount of pride, anger, or earthly power can take His place.
And that invites an honest question: What am I still holding onto that I need to place in God’s hands?
Maybe it is a fear you keep carrying into tomorrow. Maybe it is resentment, a need to prove yourself, or a decision you have been making without seeking Him. The uneasiness you feel may be an invitation to bring that part of your life before Him, too.
At P346, we believe in showing up, loving our neighbors, and putting faith into action. Stillness has a place in that work. We need moments to pray, listen, and remember whose love we are sharing. We can serve faithfully while trusting God with the things beyond our reach.
So today, take a breath. Let your prayer be honest.
If you are weary, come to Him for rest. If you recognize resistance in your heart, ask Him to help you surrender. If you are feeling both, bring both.
You can trust the God Who humbles you to also be your refuge.
🙏 A Prayer for You
Heavenly Father,
I lift up the person reading this right now. You know the burdens they carry, the thoughts that keep them awake, and the places where life feels uncertain.
Be their refuge and strength. When everything around them seems to shake, help them find their footing in Your presence. Remind them that they can come to You with trembling hands and an honest heart.
Where they need comfort, draw them close. Where they need correction, lead them with mercy. Where fear or pride has tightened their grip, give them the courage and humility to surrender.
Quiet the striving within us, Lord. Teach us to listen, to seek Your will, and to follow You in the ordinary decisions of each day. Help us care for our neighbors with compassion and trust You with what we cannot carry or change.
Let these words settle deeply into our hearts: You are God. You are with us. You are our refuge.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen. 🙏
